News from Beyond
Happy New Year!
Good evening!
Michelle and I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy new year!
Around here we are making a few changes. First, I will be moving the podcast to a new server and blog. The domain and RSS feed will stay the same, so you have to change nothing to find us after the move.
Second, we'll be tightening up the format and schedule around here. 2010 was a pretty crazy year, especially with simultaneously producing the podiobook for LILITH'S LOVE. However, keeping to a schedule will mean shorter episodes (less catchup) and live video stream of our recording sessions.
Finally, I have all of the categories for the Polidori awards ready. I will be posting voting booths for them all very soon. The hope is for you to vote People's Choice style as well as Michelle and I.
So, we'll see you in 2011 for our THIRD anniversary!
~Dan
Episode #66 - LOST BOYS 3: The Thirst
* This is Episode #66 for December 9, 2010.

// NEWS
* Leslie Nielsen died on Sunday, Nov 28, 2010, at the age of 84.
- Star of many films, mostly zany parodies since the 90's, including Mel Brooks' "DRACULA: Dead and Loving It" and "Stan Helsing".
// LILITH NEWS
* The Naked Archaeologist Lilith episode
- Some info about The Burney Relief
* J. Daniel Sawyer releases LILITH short story as an e-book
- Was originally heard on Sculpting God short story anthology podcast over at jdsawyer.net
- Dan is the author of "Predestination", "Free Will", "Down From Ten", all as podcast fiction and now has a new Clarke Lantham Mystery series, starting with AND THEN SHE WAS GONE.
- Oh, and of course he was the inimitable Border Guard in my podiobook, LILITH'S LOVE.
// MOVIE NEWS
* Deadline.com: Johnny Depp To Start 'Dark Shadows' In April With Tim Burton Directing
- The DARK SHADOWS movie is finally on track to start filming in April. The big news though is that Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, will pen the screenplay! This helps solidify the plans for Tim Burton to direct ABE's big screen adaptation. But I still can't imagine Depp as Lincoln. As Henry, yes, but not Lincoln.
* Buffy Reboot is a go!
- The most interesting news to me is that the reboot does not take place in high school. So is this a reboot or an odd sequel spin?
- While details are sparse, filmmakers claim the movie would not revisit the vampire slayer’s high school days, attempting instead to capture the “witty, tough, and sexy” heroine in a new way. The team behind the project includes Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and relative newcomer Whit Anderson. The movie could hit theaters in 2012 or late 2011, according to the L.A. Times.
- Joss' reaction to the news...
- Kristy Swanson's reaction...
* Uber-Lycans? Oh dear.
- The fourth Underworld movie, tentatively titled "Underworld 4: New Dawn" is underway with Kate Beckinsale back as Selene. At first, this made me happy. Reading the plot quote however has me nervous: "After being held in a coma-like state for fifteen years, vampire Selene learns that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter, Nissa, and when she finds her they must stop BioCom from creating super Lycans that will kill them all." UW4 has a planned release on January 20, 2012 in 3-D. Of course.
* MIDNIGHT SON is the story of Jacob, a young man confined to a life of isolation, due to a rare skin disorder that prevents him from being exposed to sunlight.
- This upcoming independent flick has a great hook and I look forward to watching it soon. Best of luck to Scott and the cast and crew!
// BOOK NEWS
* The sequels in Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series soon to be released on audio by Recorded Books.
- CHANGELESS is due Dec 04, 2010 and BLAMELESS is due Mar 10, 2011. Audible picked up SOULLESS, so I expect they'll get these also.
* New Jersey Star-Ledger Interview with Anne Rice
- An interesting interview with Anne Rice. Too bad it is getting press mainly because of her statements about Stephenie Meyer and not because it's ANNE FRICKIN' RICE.
- She said, "It’s based on a really silly premise: that immortals would go to high school. It’s a failure of imagination, but at the same time, that silly premise has provided Stephenie Meyer with huge success. It’s almost like a stroke of genius to put vampires in high school. They just graduate over and over again... The idea that if you are immortal you would go to high school instead of Katmandu or Paris or Venice, it’s the vampire dumbed down for kids. But it’s worked. It’s successful. It makes kids really happy."

* Firefly Between the Lines Auditions!

* V-Blood vials are a sweet treat for fangbangers
- I discovered these little vials of "V-Blood" on my recent business trip to Florida when I stopped in a Hot Topic.
- They are sealed vials with a thick, red liquid inside, but they are bascially red-tinted honey. They were about $2.00 each. I haven't found them at our local HT shops yet, but you can buy them online, at 5 vials for $10.00.
// BOOK REVIEWS
* I just finished THE OLD POWER RETURNS, the sequel DARKSOME THIRST by Morven Westfield.
- Perfect sequel to DARKSOME THIRST. A couple years have passed but the story carries on quite well. It is a fine book standalone, even though you get more depth from both books. I like when a sequel isn't dependent on its predecessors. We get a great resolution but there is set up for a grand conflict in the third book. Now we must wait for Morven to release it. :-)
- I give THE OLD POWER RETURNS a 10/10.
* Next up, BLAMELESS by Gail Carriger.
// COMIC BOOKS
* How did I miss X-Men: Curse of the Mutants?!?
- Dracula's son causes trouble and turns various X-Men into vampires!

* Police Release Tape of Chandler "Vampire" Victim
- In the news around the state and in nationally, is a couple from Chandler, AZ (Amanda Williamson and Aaron Homer), who attacked their roommate (Robert Maley) when he wouldn't let them suck his blood.
- ''In an exchange with a Chandler police officer, the victim, 25-year-old Robert Maley, was asked by the officer "he wants to cut you again so he could suck your blood?". Maley replied "and I said no and then he flipped because they think they're vampires." The couple, according to Maley, is "into vampire stuff." And not in that Twilight sort of way. Maley says he'd let his roommates, 24-year-old Aaron Homer and 21-year-old Amanda Williamson, suck his blood in the past but this time he wasn't interested. After Maley told the couple they couldn't suck his blood, Homer became furious and stabbed him in the arm.
Bleeding heavily, Maley didn't immediately call an ambulance because there was a warrant out for his arrest for a probation violation. Rather, he ran out of the apartment leaving a snack for Homer and Williamson trail of blood leading out of the apartment. Simultaneously, firefighters were treating someone next door to Maley's apartment when they saw a man with blood gushing out of his arm. They called police.
When police arrived, Williamson and Homer were sitting in the blood-covered apartment. Williamson said she stabbed Maley in self defense after he attacked her. Homer told several different stories -- none of which were believed by police -- before finally settling on claiming Maley made fun of their "religion," so he stabbed him. Williamson was arrested on charges of false reporting. Homer was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, and Maley was arrested on his probation violation warrant. He was also treated for the wound, which required several stitches.''

- At Fantastic Fest 2010 (Sept 23-30) in Austin, TX, the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow had a very claustrophobic premiere. Four viewers were blindfolded and buried alive in special coffins fitted with small screens in their lids. Even better, after the movie, and release from their macabre theaters, they met Ryan Reynolds. For the rest of us, "Buried" premieres on October 8th.
